It's been a busy summer, and blogging hasn't crept near the top of my to-do list. I'm still working on finishing up my children's record while promoting Imagining Dancers and booking work for the fall. I've also been spending some time working on my home studio.
I owned a Ken Smith bass for a few months. It wasn't the answer to my home studio needs, so I've been researching bass tone. Always, always I come back to Paul McCartney. But I cannot really afford the Rickenbacker he plays - or at least I shouldn't spend that kind of money on an instrument I barely play - and the famous Beatle Bass isn't really what I am after.
So then I find myself thinking about Tony Levin's tone on Double Fantasy. It's just so musical, so rich. Funny how those Beatles always find their way to the top of my list, even when it's just a guy playing in one of their bands on a solo project:
Tony supposedly played a Stingray on those sessions. Yet, everyone I ask who "knows" says I should find a P bass. The search continues... But I know very well a piece of gear is never going to make me sound like Tony Levin.
